Rwanda's banking sector is well-developed by African standards. The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) regulates a competitive market of commercial banks. For African professionals relocating to Rwanda for work, investment or the digital nomad lifestyle, opening a bank account is a practical necessity. Here is what the process involves.

Bank of Kigali is the most commonly recommended for foreign nationals. It is Rwanda's largest bank, has the most branches, and has the most experience with international clients.

Equity Bank Rwanda is part of the pan-African Equity Group (Kenya-based). If you already have an Equity Bank account in Kenya or another African country, the relationship may simplify the process.

Documents required

For a personal current account:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid Rwanda residence permit or work permit (required by most banks)
  • Proof of address in Rwanda (utility bill, tenancy agreement, or letter from employer)
  • Passport photographs
  • Completed account opening form

For a business current account:

  • All personal documents above
  • RDB certificate of incorporation
  • Memorandum and articles of association
  • Board resolution authorising account opening
  • Proof of business address in Rwanda

Note on residence permit: Most banks require a valid residence permit to open a full current account. If you have just arrived in Rwanda and your permit is being processed, ask about a temporary account or a non-resident account while you wait.

The process step by step

  1. Choose your bank - Bank of Kigali is the most accessible starting point for most foreign nationals
  2. Gather your documents - ensure your passport, permit and proof of address are ready
  3. Visit a branch - most banks require in-person attendance for account opening
  4. Complete the forms - the bank will provide account opening forms
  5. Submit documents - originals and copies are typically required
  6. Wait for approval - typically 1-3 working days
  7. Receive your account details - you will receive your account number, debit card, and online banking credentials

Currency and international transfers

Rwandan Franc (RWF): Rwanda's currency is not pegged to any major currency. Exchange rates fluctuate. Most banks offer USD, EUR and GBP accounts alongside RWF accounts.

International transfers: Rwanda has a well-functioning SWIFT system. Receiving international transfers (from clients, employers, or your Nigerian account) is straightforward. Sending large amounts internationally may require documentation of the source of funds.

Mobile money: MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is widely used in Rwanda for everyday transactions. You can link your bank account to MoMo for easy transfers. This is particularly useful for paying rent, utilities and local services.

Practical tips

Arrive with USD cash: When you first arrive in Rwanda, having USD cash allows you to exchange at a bureau de change while your bank account is being set up. USD is widely accepted for exchange.

Open a USD account: If your income is in USD, EUR or GBP, open a foreign currency account alongside your RWF account. This avoids unnecessary conversion costs.

Keep your Nigerian account active: Do not close your Nigerian bank account when you relocate. You will need it for receiving Nigerian-source income, paying Nigerian obligations, and as a backup.

Fintech alternatives: Wise and Payoneer both work in Rwanda and can receive international payments. They are useful as a bridge while your Rwandan bank account is being set up.
