Budget planning guide

These are planning ranges only. Actual costs depend on your specific institution, city and circumstances. All figures are approximate.

Under $5,000 available

Best options: Italy DSU scholarship or Hungary Stipendium Hungaricum. Your cash covers application fees, document legalisation and travel. The scholarship covers everything else. These routes require strong academic records and early applications (12+ months ahead).

$5,000โ€“$12,000 available

Best option: Germany blocked account route. โ‚ฌ11,208 (~$12,000) covers the blocked account. Zero tuition means your ongoing costs are living expenses, which part-time work (up to 20 hours/week) can cover. Apply to 5โ€“8 universities to maximise admission chances.

$12,000โ€“$20,000 available

Options open: Germany, Finland (โ‚ฌ800/month living funds), Norway (NOK 170,368/year), Sweden (SEK 10,656/month). Nordic countries have low or no tuition at public universities but higher living costs than Germany.

$20,000+ available

All study pathways open. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland become viable. Focus on academic fit, post-study work rights and long-term residency pathways rather than just upfront cost.

Key steps for any study application

  1. Choose your destination and confirm the official requirements on the government portal
  2. Research universities and programmes โ€” apply to multiple institutions
  3. Prepare language test (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF, or equivalent)
  4. Gather and authenticate documents (transcripts, certificates, passport)
  5. Secure funds or scholarship confirmation before applying for a visa
  6. Book embassy appointment early โ€” slots fill 6โ€“8 weeks out in Lagos and Abuja
  7. Apply for visa with complete documentation

Start at least 12 months before your intended start date. Document authentication (apostille, sworn translation, APS for Germany) takes time.
