Employment Visa: employer-sponsored, no fixed minimum salary published universally
Green Visa: AED 15,000/month minimum salary, bachelor's degree required
Freelance Permit: AED 7,500 - 15,000/year depending on free zone
Golden Visa: AED 2,000,000 minimum investment (investor category)
The UAE - and Dubai in particular - is the most active Gulf destination for African professionals. It has four distinct work-related visa routes, each suited to a different profile. Understanding which route applies to you is the first step.
Route 1 - Employment Visa (employer-sponsored)
The standard route for most African workers in the UAE. Your employer applies for a work permit from MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation) before you apply for the visa.
Process:
- Employer obtains work permit approval from MOHRE
- You apply for an employment entry visa at the UAE consulate in Nigeria
- You enter the UAE and complete a medical examination
- You receive your Emirates ID and residence visa (valid 2 years, renewable)
No universal minimum salary: MOHRE does not publish a single minimum salary threshold for all occupations. Salary requirements vary by occupation category, emirate and employer type. Your employment contract must specify your salary.
Who pays the fees: Government work permit and visa fees are typically paid by the employer. If you are being asked to pay large upfront fees, ask for a breakdown showing what is government fee and what is agent fee.

Route 2 - Green Visa (self-sponsored skilled worker)
Introduced in 2022, the Green Visa allows skilled workers to sponsor themselves without an employer.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000 (approximately USD 4,085 or NGN 6.1M/month)
- Valid employment contract or proof of self-employment income
Duration: 5 years, renewable.
Key difference from Employment Visa: You are not tied to a specific employer. You can change jobs without losing your visa status.

Route 3 - Freelance Permit
For self-employed professionals and independent contractors. Issued by UAE free zone authorities, not MOHRE.
Requirements:
- Proof of professional qualifications or portfolio
- Application to a free zone authority (Dubai Media City, Dubai Internet City, Fujairah Creative City, etc.)
- Annual fee: AED 7,500 - 15,000 depending on the free zone
What it allows: You can work as a freelancer for multiple clients in the UAE. You cannot be employed by a UAE company on a freelance permit - that requires an employment visa.
Primary source: Check the specific free zone authority for current fees and requirements.
Route 4 - Golden Visa (long-term residence)
The Golden Visa is a 10-year renewable residence permit for high-value individuals.
Categories and thresholds:
| Category | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Real estate investor | AED 2,000,000 property value |
| Business investor | AED 2,000,000 investment in a UAE company |
| Entrepreneur | Approved startup with AED 500,000 capital |
| Exceptional talent | Accreditation from relevant UAE authority |
| Outstanding student | GPA 3.75+ from UAE or top global university |
Duration: 10 years, renewable.
