South Africa is the largest economy in Africa and a major destination for skilled African professionals. It has two primary work visa routes: the Critical Skills Visa (no job offer required) and the General Work Visa (employer-sponsored). Here is what the Department of Home Affairs actually requires.

Critical Skills Visa - no job offer required

The Critical Skills Visa is the most accessible South African work visa for qualified African professionals. You apply on the basis of your qualifications and experience in a listed critical skill.

Requirements:

  • Qualification in a field on the Critical Skills List
  • Evaluation of your qualification by the relevant South African professional body
  • Proof of work experience in the critical skill
  • Valid passport, police clearance, medical certificate, radiological report

The professional body evaluation: Before applying, you must have your qualification evaluated by the relevant South African professional body. For example:

  • IT professionals: IITPSA (Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa)
  • Engineers: ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa)
  • Healthcare: HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa)
  • Accountants: SAICA or SAIPA

Processing time: 4-8 weeks at the South African High Commission in Abuja.

Validity: 5 years, renewable.

Path to permanent residence: After 5 years of continuous residence in South Africa on a Critical Skills Visa, you can apply for permanent residence.

General Work Visa - employer-sponsored

The General Work Visa requires employer sponsorship and proof that no South African was available for the role.

Requirements:

  • Confirmed job offer from a South African employer
  • Labour market test: the employer must advertise the position and demonstrate that no suitable South African candidate was available
  • Evaluation of your qualification by the relevant professional body
  • Valid passport, police clearance, medical certificate

Processing time: Longer than the Critical Skills Visa due to the labour market test requirement. Allow 3-6 months.
