Saudi Arabia is the largest economy in the Gulf and a major employer of African professionals. Vision 2030 - the kingdom's economic diversification programme - has created new sectors and new visa routes. Here is what official sources confirm.

Standard work visa - Kafala system

Saudi Arabia's standard work visa operates through the Kafala (sponsorship) system. Your employer applies for a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) before you can apply for a visa.

Process:

  1. Employer applies for work permit from MHRSD
  2. Employer receives approval and issues you a visa authorisation
  3. You apply for an employment visa at the Saudi consulate in Nigeria
  4. You enter Saudi Arabia and complete a medical examination
  5. You receive your Iqama (residence permit) - valid 1-2 years, renewable

Processing time: 4-8 weeks after employer application.

The Nitaqat quota system

Saudi Arabia's Nitaqat system requires employers to maintain a minimum ratio of Saudi nationals to expatriate workers. This affects which roles are available to foreign workers.

What this means for African applicants:

  • Employers in the "Platinum" or "Green" Nitaqat band can sponsor more expatriate workers
  • Employers in the "Yellow" or "Red" band cannot sponsor new expatriate workers
  • Healthcare, construction and domestic services have different Nitaqat thresholds
  • Ask any potential employer about their current Nitaqat status before accepting an offer

Vision 2030 - new sectors and opportunities

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme is creating new employment opportunities in:

Sector Vision 2030 target Relevance for Africans
Tourism 100 million visitors/year by 2030 Hospitality, hotel management, tour operations
