Key figures (2026)
Standard work visa: employer-sponsored, quota system applies
Freelance permit: requires registered business activity in Oman
Processing time: 2-4 weeks after employer application

Oman is a Gulf state with a significant African workforce, particularly in construction, healthcare and domestic services. The agent market is active with claims about Oman work visas - some accurate, some not. Here is what official sources confirm.

Standard work visa - employer-sponsored

Oman's standard work visa requires employer sponsorship. Your employer must have available quota under Oman's Omanisation system before they can sponsor you.

Process:

  1. Employer applies for work permit from Ministry of Labour
  2. Employer must have available Omanisation quota
  3. You apply for an employment visa at the Oman consulate in Nigeria
  4. You enter Oman and complete a medical examination
  5. You receive your residence card - valid 2 years, renewable

The Omanisation quota: Oman requires employers to maintain a minimum ratio of Omani nationals to expatriate workers. The ratio varies by sector. Employers who have exceeded their quota cannot sponsor new expatriate workers.

Freelance permit - for self-employed professionals

Oman's freelance permit allows qualified professionals to work independently. It is not a tourist visa with work rights - it requires establishing a legitimate business presence.

Requirements:

  • Proof of professional qualifications relevant to the business activity
  • Registered business activity in Oman
  • Valid passport
  • Clean criminal record

What it allows: Working independently for multiple clients in Oman. You cannot be employed by an Oman company on a freelance permit - that requires an employment visa.

The agent market reality: Agents advertise "Oman 2-year freelance visa" with fees of NGN 2.5M or more. The freelance permit system is real, but the specific terms and fees vary. The NGN figures are agent service fees, not government fees. Government fees are paid in Omani Rials and are significantly lower.

What to verify before accepting any Oman offer

Oman has a minimum wage for Omani nationals but no published universal minimum wage for expatriate workers. Your salary is determined by your employment contract. Get it in writing before travelling.

Documents required:

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Passport photographs
  • Educational certificates (attested)
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Police clearance certificate

Red flags to watch for:

  • Agent asking for large upfront fees before you have a signed employment contract
  • Job offer with no named employer or company registration number
  • "Salary 150 rial" offers - OMR 150/month (approximately USD 390) is at the very low end for skilled work
