Namibia is one of Africa's most stable and least densely populated countries. It borders South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Angola, and has a well-developed infrastructure by regional standards. The Digital Nomad Visa, introduced to attract remote workers, makes it one of the few Southern African countries with a formal remote work residence route.

For African remote workers looking for a Southern African base - particularly those with South African clients or business interests - Namibia offers a practical option.

What the Digital Nomad Visa is

Namibia's Digital Nomad Visa is a residence authorisation for foreign nationals who work remotely for employers or clients outside Namibia. It is issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS) for an initial period of 6 months, extendable.

It is not a work permit for local employment. Holders may not work for a Namibia-based employer.

Eligibility requirements

The MHAISS requires:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of remote employment or freelance income sourced outside Namibia - employment contract, client contracts, or bank statements showing regular income
  • Proof of accommodation in Namibia - rental agreement or hotel booking
  • Health insurance covering Namibia
  • Clean criminal record certificate
  • Completed application form

The commonly cited minimum income threshold is approximately USD 2,000/month. This is not a fixed published figure.

Cost and timeline

The visa application fee is approximately NAD 1,500 (approximately USD 80). Processing time varies. Applications are submitted at the Namibia High Commission or Embassy in your country.

The indicative setup cost including visa fee, initial accommodation deposit and travel is approximately USD 1,500-2,500.

Windhoek as a base

Windhoek, the capital, is the practical base for most remote workers in Namibia:

Connectivity. Windhoek has reliable 4G and fibre broadband. Co-working spaces are available. Connectivity outside Windhoek drops significantly.

Cost of living. Namibia is more expensive than West Africa but cheaper than South Africa. Accommodation, food and transport are reasonable in Windhoek.

Time zone. UTC+2 (UTC+1 in winter). Good overlap with European and East African business hours.

Banking. Namibia uses the Namibian Dollar (NAD), pegged to the South African Rand. South African Rand is also accepted. Banking infrastructure is well-developed.

Flights. Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport has direct connections to Johannesburg, Frankfurt, Addis Ababa and several regional hubs. Lagos to Windhoek typically requires a connection through Johannesburg or Addis Ababa.
