Mauritius is one of the few African countries with a passport that opens doors - visa-free access to the EU Schengen area, the UK, Singapore and most of Asia. It is also one of the few African countries actively courting remote workers with a dedicated visa route.
The Premium Visa is not a work permit. It is a residence authorisation for people who already have income from outside Mauritius and want to live on the island while continuing that work. For African remote workers and freelancers, it is a straightforward route to a stable, well-connected base in the Indian Ocean.
What the Premium Visa is
The Mauritius Premium Visa is issued by the Economic Development Board (EDB), the government agency responsible for attracting foreign investment and talent to Mauritius. It allows foreign nationals to live in Mauritius for up to one year, renewable, while working remotely for employers or clients outside Mauritius.
It is not a path to permanent residence in itself - Mauritius has separate long-term residence routes for investors and retirees. But it provides a legal, renewable basis for living in Mauritius as a remote worker.
Who it is for
The Premium Visa is designed for:
- Employees working remotely for a foreign employer
- Freelancers and consultants with clients outside Mauritius
- Digital entrepreneurs running online businesses with non-Mauritius revenue
It is not for people who want to work for a Mauritius company, set up a Mauritius business, or seek employment locally. Those routes require different permits.
What you need to apply
The EDB requires:
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond your intended stay)
- Proof of remote employment - employment contract, letter from employer, or client contracts for freelancers
- Proof of accommodation in Mauritius - hotel booking, rental agreement, or letter from host
- Health insurance covering Mauritius for the duration of your stay
- Clean criminal record certificate from your home country
- Completed application form via the EDB portal
The EDB does not publish a fixed minimum income threshold. You must demonstrate sufficient financial means. In practice, remote workers earning USD 2,000-3,000/month or more are well within the expected range.
Cost and timeline
The Premium Visa application is processed online through the EDB portal. As of October 2026, no application fee is published by the EDB. Processing time is typically 5-10 working days.
The indicative setup cost for relocating to Mauritius - visa, initial accommodation deposit, travel - is approximately USD 1,500-2,500 depending on your accommodation choice and origin.
Why Mauritius works for African remote workers
Mauritius has several practical advantages for African professionals:
Time zone. UTC+4 - overlaps with European business hours in the morning and East African hours throughout the day.
Connectivity. Mauritius has reliable fibre broadband and 4G/5G coverage across the main island. Co-working spaces are available in Port Louis and Grand Baie.
Banking. Mauritius has a well-developed banking sector. Opening a bank account as a Premium Visa holder is straightforward compared to many African countries.
Tax. Mauritius has a flat 15% income tax rate and no capital gains tax. Remote workers whose income is sourced outside Mauritius may have limited Mauritius tax liability - confirm with a local tax adviser.
Passport. The Mauritian passport ranks among the strongest in Africa. Living in Mauritius does not give you a Mauritian passport, but it provides a stable base from which to manage international travel.
