Switzerland has two publishable pathways for Nigerian applicants: a study residence permit and a work permit. Both are subject to strict controls — Switzerland applies a priority check for work permits and a quota system that limits non-EU admissions.
Study permit
Minimum funds: Approximately CHF 21,000/year (CHF 1,750/month) for living costs. This is the commonly cited minimum — actual costs in Swiss cities are typically higher. Tuition fees are additional and vary by canton and institution (typically CHF 500 to CHF 3,000 per semester at public universities).
Requirements: Confirmation of enrolment or acceptance from a recognised Swiss university or higher education institution, proof of funds, valid passport.
Issued by: The cantonal migration authority (Migrationsamt) of the canton where your university is located.
Processing time: 2-4 months.
Path to PR: After 10 years of continuous legal residence in Switzerland (reduced to 5 years for some categories), you can apply for permanent residence.

Work permit
Priority check: The employer must demonstrate that no suitable Swiss or EU/EFTA candidate was available for the position before sponsoring a non-EU national. This is a genuine barrier — Swiss employers must advertise the vacancy and document the search.
Quota system: Switzerland limits the number of non-EU work permits issued each year. Quotas are set by the federal government and allocated to cantons.
Requirements: Confirmed job offer from a Swiss employer, successful priority check, valid passport.
Processing time: 2-4 months.
