Sweden has two publishable pathways for Nigerian applicants: a study residence permit and a standard work permit. Both are issued by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).
Study permit
Minimum funds: SEK 10,656/month (2026 figure). The authority notes this may be reduced where free food or housing is provided. Tuition fees are additional — non-EU students pay SEK 80,000 to SEK 140,000 per year at most institutions.
Requirements: Admission to a Swedish higher education institution, proof of funds, valid passport.
Work rights: No formal restriction on working hours alongside studies.
Processing time: 1-3 months via the Migrationsverket online portal.
Path to PR: After 5 years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for permanent residence.

Work permit
Salary threshold: SEK 34,470/month gross from 1 June 2026 (90% of the median salary of SEK 38,300). This is the job offer salary threshold — the employer must offer at least this amount. Exemptions and transitional rules apply.
Requirements: Job offer from a Swedish employer meeting the salary threshold. The employer advertises the vacancy in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least 10 days before sponsoring a non-EU national.
Processing time: 1-3 months.
Path to PR: After 5 years of continuous legal residence.
