Netherlands Visa from Nigeria: The 2026 Reality Check
Evidence status
The Netherlands is not yet in the MyPathway2Global structured pathway registry. This means the route engine cannot currently recommend Netherlands pathways, and no evidence-gated requirement records exist for this destination. This audit summarises what official sources confirm and is clearly scoped to that evidence.
Approval rates by nationality are not published by the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst) and are not shown here.

What official sources confirm
Student residence permit
Nigerian students applying to study in the Netherlands for more than 90 days require a residence permit (not a short-stay Schengen visa). The process is typically initiated by the Dutch educational institution on the student's behalf — the institution applies for an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV) and residence permit simultaneously.
Key official source: ind.nl — Study
What is confirmed:
- Admission to a recognised Dutch higher-education institution is required
- The institution must be an IND-recognised sponsor
- The institution initiates the application process — the student does not apply directly to the IND in most cases
What is not yet in the evidence registry:
- Structured minimum funds threshold with a primary-source effective date
- Exact fee schedule with a primary-source effective date
The IND publishes indicative living cost guidance — confirm the current figure directly at ind.nl before planning.
Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant)
The Highly Skilled Migrant route is for professionals with a confirmed employment offer from an IND-recognised sponsor employer in the Netherlands.
Key official source: ind.nl — Highly Skilled Migrant
What is confirmed:
- A confirmed job offer from an IND-recognised sponsor employer is required
- The employer must be registered as a recognised sponsor with the IND
- A minimum gross monthly salary threshold applies — the IND publishes current thresholds at ind.nl
What is not yet in the evidence registry:
- The salary threshold with a primary-source effective date in the MyPathway2Global format
- Structured requirement records
The IND updates salary thresholds annually. Confirm the current threshold directly at the official source before planning.
Why this pathway is not yet in the route engine
To be recommended by the MyPathway2Global route engine, a pathway needs:
- A structured evidence record with a primary-source URL and effective date
- At least one verified requirement (funds threshold, salary threshold, or admission requirement) with a confirmed value
Netherlands pathways are in the research queue. When evidence records are complete, they will be added to the registry and the route engine will surface them automatically.
Key planning considerations
Dutch as a language: Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in Dutch. English-taught Master's programmes are widely available — the Netherlands has one of the largest English-taught postgraduate sectors in Europe. Confirm the language of instruction before applying.
Institution as sponsor: Unlike many countries where the student applies directly to the immigration authority, Dutch institutions handle the residence permit application for international students. Choose your institution first — the process flows from there.
EUR/NGN exchange rate: Living costs in the Netherlands are high by European standards. Amsterdam and other major cities have significant housing costs. Confirm current NGN equivalents with your bank.
