China has two publishable pathways for Nigerian applicants: a student visa (X1 for long-stay) and a work visa (Z visa). China is also notable for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which provides fully funded study opportunities for Nigerian students.
Student visa (X1)
Admission notice: A JW201 (CSC scholarship) or JW202 (self-funded) admission notice from a Chinese university approved by the Ministry of Education is required. The university issues this after accepting your application.
Minimum funds: Approximately USD 2,500/year for living expenses for self-funded students. China is a relatively low-cost study destination. Tuition fees are additional and vary by institution and programme (typically USD 2,000-5,000/year for English-taught programmes).
CSC scholarship: The Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend of CNY 2,500-3,500 (approximately USD 350-490/month), and medical insurance. Applications are submitted through the Chinese Embassy in Abuja, typically in January-March each year.
Processing time: 1-2 months after receiving the admission notice.
