Australia Visa from Nigeria: The 2026 Reality Check

Evidence status

Approval rates by nationality are not published by the Department of Home Affairs and are not shown here. Processing times change frequently — the Department publishes current medians at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. All requirements below are sourced from primary government sources with effective dates.

What is available

Four publishable pathways in the MyPathway2Global registry:

Pathway Type Visa subclass
Student visa Study Subclass 500
Skilled Independent Work Subclass 189
Skilled Nominated Work Subclass 190
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Work Subclass 491

Student visa — subclass 500

Official source: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — Student 500

Core requirements

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): A CoE from a registered CRICOS provider is required before applying. Admission alone does not satisfy this — the institution must issue the CoE.

Genuine Student requirement: The applicant must demonstrate the primary purpose of the stay is study and that they intend to comply with visa conditions. Assessed holistically — no single document guarantees satisfaction.

Indicative living funds (2026):

Person AUD per year
Primary applicant 29,710
Accompanying spouse/partner 10,394
Each school-age child 4,449

Source: effective 2026-09-13. These are indicative amounts — the decision-maker assesses genuine access to funds, not just nominal holdings. Tuition fees are separate and vary by institution and course.

Skilled Independent visa — subclass 189

Official source: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — Skilled Independent 189

A points-tested permanent residence visa. No employer sponsorship required, but the nominated occupation must be on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Requirements

Requirement Value Notes
Minimum points to submit EOI 65 Reaching 65 does not guarantee an invitation — cut-offs are typically higher
Maximum age at invitation Under 45 years
Skills assessment Required From the relevant Australian assessing authority
English proficiency Competent English IELTS 6.0 in each band or equivalent

Source: effective 2026-10-18.

How invitations work

Submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) at 65 points places you in the SkillSelect pool. Home Affairs issues invitations periodically, ranked by score. Actual cut-offs in recent rounds have been well above 65 — check the Department's published invitation round data before investing in a skills assessment.

Skilled Nominated visa — subclass 190

Official source: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — Skilled Nominated 190

Same points test as subclass 189, but requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government. Nomination adds 5 points. Each state/territory sets its own occupation list and criteria — check the relevant state authority directly.

Requirement Value
Minimum points for EOI 65
State/territory nomination Required
Maximum age at invitation Under 45 years
Skills assessment Required

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa — subclass 491

Official source: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au — Skilled Work Regional 491

A provisional visa. Permanent residency requires 3 years of regional work and meeting income thresholds before applying for subclass 191. Nomination adds 15 points (higher than subclass 190).

Requirement Value
Minimum points for EOI 65
State/territory or eligible family nomination Required
Maximum age at invitation Under 45 years
Skills assessment Required
Regional requirement Must live and work in a designated regional area for the visa duration

Key planning considerations

Skills assessment lead time: Most assessing authorities take 8–16 weeks. This must be completed before submitting an EOI.

English test: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted. Higher scores earn more points — IELTS 8.0 in each band earns the maximum English points allocation.

Occupation eligibility: Not all occupations are on the MLTSSL. Check eligible skilled occupations before investing in a skills assessment.

AUD funds: The student living funds threshold (AUD 29,710/year) is a significant sum. Confirm the current NGN equivalent with your bank — exchange rates move.

What this audit does not cover

Visitor visas, Working Holiday (subclass 417/462), partner and family visas, and employer-sponsored routes (subclass 482, 186) are not currently in the evidence registry.
