Post-study work rights

Federal Skilled Worker Program (Express Entry)

Express Entry is Canada's invitation-based system for skilled workers seeking permanent residency.

Requirements

  • Minimum selection factor points: 67 out of 100 — source: IRCC FSWP
  • Minimum work experience: 1 year continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation in the past 10 years
  • Language: CLB 7 minimum in English or French (IELTS General Training 6.0 in each band)
  • Education: Secondary school minimum; post-secondary education earns more points
  • Settlement funds (family size 1): CAD 14,690 — exempt if you have a valid Canadian job offer

How the CRS works

After meeting the 67-point threshold, you enter the Express Entry pool. IRCC conducts draws and issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to the highest-scoring candidates. Recent 2026 draw cut-offs have been in the 480–520 CRS range. Your CRS score is calculated from age, education, language, work experience, and adaptability factors.

Key barriers for Nigerian applicants

These are documented process barriers — not approval rate statistics:

  1. Financial proof: Bank statements must clearly show the required funds are genuinely accessible. Statements showing sudden large deposits close to the application date are scrutinised.
  2. Document authentication: Transcripts and certificates must be verified. WES (World Education Services) assessment is required for most Express Entry applications.
  3. Language test: IELTS or CELPIP results must be recent (within 2 years of application).
  4. Biometrics: Required for most Canadian visa applications — book early at a VAC in Lagos or Abuja.
